According the Chemicals Act of Germany the Bundesländer (federal states of Germany) have to constitute and support poison information centres, that give advice in cases of poisonings, collect data on poisonings and report on poisonings to a surveillance unit at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Berlin.
The GIZ-Nord Poisons Centre is the officially notified poisons centre for the four northwestern states of Germany, i.e. Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. Most of the GIZ-Nord financial budget is provided by the federal states.
The GIZ-Nord Poisons Centre is part of the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) of the Georg-August-Universität.
As all German poisons centres the GIZ-Nord gives advice to the general public and to medical doctors treating poisoned patients. The service is available 24 hours a day. Toxicology trained medical doctors give advice. A nurse, two chemists, an IT specialist and two technicians support them.
Since 2004, cooperation between the GIZ-Nord Poisons Centre and the Poisons Information Centre Erfurt has been established: Between 22:00 h and 08:00 h only one of the two cooperating units is on duty.

The GIZ-Nord serves 12.6 million people in Northern Germany, in 2007 it has answered 32.000 calls, 55 % of these from the public and 45 % from medical personnel.
Associated to the GIZ-Nord Poisons Centres is the Göttingen Toxicological Laboratory that serves as an emergency analysis unit for the university hospital and for many regional hospitals. Samples from all regions of Germany are analysed for metformin, ethylene glycol, glycol ethers, and some further toxicological parameters. The GIZ-Nord Poisons Centre and the Clinical Toxicology Laboratory together form the Pharmacological-toxicological Service Centre (PTS) of the UMG.
Staff members of GIZ-Nord Poisons Centre are engaged in the activities of scientific associations, e.g. European Association of Poisons Centre and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT), Gesellschaft für Klinische Toxikologie (Society for Clinical Toxicology, GfKT) and Gesellschaft für Toxikologische und Forensische Chemie (Society for Toxicologic and Forensic Chemistry, GTFCh).
The GIZ-Nord Poison Centre is member of the ASHT project group that develops a Rapid Alert System for Health Threats from release of chemicals by terrorists (RAS-CHEM). The European Commission (DG-SANCO) supports the ASHT project.
