Poisons centres and their activities are increasingly recognized by legislation and administrations on national and European levels.

In European legislation poisons centres are directly or indirectly mentioned

  • in the regulation on cosmetic products (1223/2009 , article 13)
  • in the resolution on prevention and treatment of human poisonings (90/C 329/03)
  • in the biocides directive (articles 23 and 24, 98/8/EC)
  • in the dangerous substances directive (67/548/EEC, annex VI, chapter 3.1.1, 2001/59/EC)
  • in the dangerous preparations directive (1999/45/EC)
  • in the detergents regulation (article 9, 648/2004), and most recently
  • in the Regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH, EC No 1907/2006 *), Annex II on safety data sheets, section 1.4)
  • in the Regulation on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP, 1272/2008 **)

The  European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT) has formed the Working Group on Poisons Centre Activities dealing with these aspects of the increasing role of European poisons centres in regulatory processes.
